Camp Westmoreland is a 284-acre facility located about 5 miles from Florence, Alabama. This camp, with its beautiful forest of hardwoods and pines, borders Shoal Creek, one of the hottest recreation waterways in north Alabama. This camp offers a great opportunity to Scouting units for short term camping, Cub Scout activities, day camps and training events. Camp Westmoreland features a shower and bathroom facility and a newly renovated dining hall and conference facility.

Location

Situated on the west bank of Shoals Creek just 8 miles northeast of Florence, Alabama, Historic Camp Westmoreland has been hosting Boy Scouts and Camp events dating back to July 1929. One of the oldest Boy Scout Camps in the United States, it is listed on the Alabama Historical Commission Register of Landmarks and Heritage. It has a history that is matched by few Camps. Westmoreland has hosted famous visitors such as “The Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry to World Famous Photographer Jack Delano. Land on the northside of Camp was once owned in part by Chief Scout Citizen and President Theodore Roosevelt. Westmoreland served as the main Summer Camp for North Alabama for fifty years and over 70,000 Scouts have used the property.

Services

Presently it serves as a Training Facility and Campground for the Boy Scouts. It is one of five Camp properties operated by the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Camp Westmoreland began when Mr. J.E.F. Westmoreland donated an initial 44 acres of land to start a permanent Boy Scout Camp in Northwest Alabama. Since those humble beginnings in the late 1920’s, Westmoreland has grown to over 290 acres. Blessed with natural beauty, the Camp has over 20 campsites available for Packs, Troops and Crews to use. We welcome any Unit to come and experience the magic of “Westmoreland” and find out why it is the best kept secret in Alabama. Have you earned your “Wings”?
